Why is this K-Beauty trend called Slugging?

Whenever I see someone with glowing skin I always wonder what they do and what products they use. Growing up I was taught to use Clarisonic, harsh scrubs, astringents and basically stripping my skin dry of any natural oils it has. Now, thankfully things are different and I help clients repair their skin barrier among other skin concerns.

It all changed when I started GlyMeds Cell Protection Balm which has petrolatum as its main ingredient. This is where I learned  about slugging.

Slugging is not the same as your grandma’s facial with actual slugs, which was actually pretty bad. Essentially, it involves slathering your face in petroleum jelly as the last step of your nighttime skin care routine. If you are looking for overnight dewy skin, there is one skin care trend that has been gaining a lot of traction lately and if you haven’t heard about it yet, you must be living under a rock. The trend is known as “slugging” and it basically involves slathering your face with petroleum jelly at the beginning of your nightly beauty routine.

Petroleum jelly can help relieve dry skin by providing moisture. This occurs when applying to the skin, helping you achieve youthful-looking, glowy, and bouncy skin. It’s thought to be especially beneficial during the winter months since it is less humid than other seasons that leave your skin feeling dry.

Lots of skincare products are designed to fight off Winter’s dreaded drier air. One product that can really help your moisturizers work harder, your skin feel less tight, and is not going to budge your skincare routine is the Cell Protection Balm. During winter when I’m finished with my routine I use a pea-sized amount of petroleum over my face as a final step. This helps my moisturizer work harder, my skin is less tight and it doesn’t budge my skincare routine. The balance of skin cells and lipids are very important.  Lipids keep your outermost layer of your skin (stratum corneum) intact. If you lack lipids it means your skin barrier is damaged which leads to trans epidermal water loss. Things that can cause this is not using the right products, over exfoliating, or the environment. GlyMeds Cell Protection balm fixes that.

The Cell Protection Balm not only has petroleum but also has added benefits of other ingredients like,

Bisabolol: Is a natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial ingredient that is

obtained from chamomile. Helps accelerate the healing process of the skin and can be used on sensitive skin.

Shea Butter: A skin conditioning ingredient that is well known for its moisturizing, protecting, and healing properties. Soothes damaged skin, promotes cell regeneration and assists in circulation.

Vitamin B: This anti-inflammatory promotes wound healing and is a skin moisturizer.

Petrolatum: Helps prevent moisture loss and forms an occlusive barrier on the skin to assist in recovery from damage and reduces inflammation.

Yeast Beta Glucan: Moisturizing, nourishing, and healing.

Vitamin A Ester: Free radical scavenger. Increases epidermal thickness.
